When should we recite Takbiraat?

Answered by: Sheikh Zafar ul Hasan

Eid ul Fitr Prayer:

Eid ul Fitr prayer is held on 1st of Shawwal, after sighting the moon. The moon would be sighted on the evening of 29th or 30th Ramadan, just after Maghrib because the new Islamic date starts right after Maghrib (sunset)

Importance of Takbiraat:

Eid starts with (the recitation of Takbiraat).

Words of Allah:

Al-Baqarah

The month of Ramadan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.

(2:185)

Three forms of Hidayah (Guidance):

The Guidance that Allah Has bestowed upon us is in three forms:

  1. The greatest hidayah that Allah has bestowed on us is that He made us Muslims and made us a follower of Our Prophet صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم .
  2. That Allah Has given us the opportunity to obey and worship Him.
  3. Although Allah has made fasting obligatory for all nations, but they (Jews and Christains) were not given the Hidayah to fulfill this obligation. However, due to Allah’s Guidance, a group amongst muslims still fasts (in Ramadan) to fulfill this obligation and to fast in the same way as Our Prophet صَلَّى    اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم did.

When to Say Takbiraat?

It is important to say Takbiraat on the following three occasions:

  1. Recite the dua when the moon is sighted. After the Maghrib prayer till the start of Eid prayer, one should recite Takbiraat as much as possible.

The Salaf informed us that the Companions of the Prophet used to recite Takbiraat and praise Allah the entire night (before Eid day).

  1. When you are on your way to offer Eid prayer, you should recite Takbiraat as much as possible.

Note:

As it is not possible to go out to offer Eid Prayer currently, it is necessary to recite Takbiraat at home, as much as possible.

  1. During the Eid Khutbah, Takbiraat should be frequently recited along the regular sermon and advice.

Ibn Abdullah bin Abbas, Tarjuman ul Quran (The Quran Interpreter) used to say:

When the Shawwal moon is sighted, then it is obligatory for all Muslim (men and women) to praise Allah and recite Takbiraat.

In certain narrations, it is mentioned that every Musim should recite Takbiraat, starting from the sighting of the moon till the end of Khutbah (sermon).

Words of Takbiraat:

Allah Commanded us to recite Takbiraat in Quran and the Prophet صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم also said the same, but no specific words were mentioned. The words of Takbiraat were narrated by the Companions of the Prophet.

*الله اكبر الله اكبر لا اله الا الله والله اكبر الله اكبر ولله الحمد

*الله اكبر كبيرا والحمد لله كثيرا وسبحان الله بكرة واصيلا

Remember:

If you do not remember these words, then saying اللہ اکبر کبیرا is also enough, but it needs to be recited in abundance.

May Allah Guide us to recite Takbiraat as much as possible on the Eid Day and may Allah Accept this from us and reward us abundantly.
